Despite declaring the iPod the winner of Christmas '06, we decided to use the Zune exclusively for a while because 1) we wanted to get an even better feel of what the Zune scene was like, and 2) we're tired of the iPod. After packing the essentials—clothes, laptop, Xbox 360—we set off for the airport with the Zune in tow. High hopes abound! Would we serendipitously meet someone with a Zune and trade songs? Will a fellow passenger strike up a conversation over the cocoa-colored player?
The short answer: no. The long answer...

Also no.
We admit, we did get a kick out of holding the Zune in a sea (if a sea consists of three people) of iPods. But as much as we wished, the "Searching for Zune devices" function always gave us a "no nearby Zune devices found." No matter, it was a big airport and we had time to kill. So we walked around like doofuses, stopping at each gate and scanning for fellow Zunesters. No dice.
After a while we were afraid ...

While OLPC's XO laptops are just now starting to roll off the assembly lines in Taiwan, everyone's chomping at the bit to get their hands on one. Until the lean green machines start turning up on eBay after reaching Libyan shores, however, curious folks (like us) will have to settle for running the XO in software emulation. OLPC News has just published instructions on how to install the emulator on a Windows PC or on Mac OS X (pictured), but to accomplish either, you'll need VMware. Bonus points if you manage to paint your laptop the same OLPC green as the XO for the full effect.

Ze Germans are at it again, this time with another underwhelming offering that's sure to be forgotten almost as quickly as it was noticed. The Voigtlaender Vitolux XM 7.0 is a very run-of-the-mill 7-megapixel shooter, sporting a relatively compact 3.78- x 2.32- x 0.79-inch silver enclosure, three-inch monitor, 32MB of internal storage, SD slot, MPEG4 movie mode, and a thoroughly average 3x optical zoom. It also boasts USB 2.0 connectivity, AV out (NTSC / PAL-friendly), and PictBridge support. While the ho hum list of luxuries isn't exactly impressive, this wouldn't be a half bad backup if the price was right -- unfortunately, that's far from the case, as Voigtlaender somehow expects folks to throw down €299 ($384) to snag this "me too" offering.

While the specs on this current generation of Tablet PCs all start to bleed together after a while -- you know, Core Duo ULV processors, XGA screens, etc. -- the style war isn't over by a long shot, and we're definitely digging this "Stylistic" look from Fujitsu. The new Stylistic ST5111 and ST5112 Tablet PCs sport U2500 procs, 4GB max RAM, 100GB SATA HDD and Intel 950 integrated graphics. Connectivity aplenty is available, including WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, Firewire and a PCMCIA slot. Fujitsu is matching Lenovo and Apple's shock sensing tech for hard drive protection, and there's security snazziness galore, making these a decent bet for the business set. The main difference between the two models is the 10.4-inch screen on the ST5111, while the ST5112 gets a whole 12.1-inches of real estate, yet each laptop still manages the same 3.5 pounds of weight and 6 hours of battery life -- with an option for a 9-cell battery with 9 hours of juice. It a...

We've seen motorcycles with GPS receivers, heads-up displays and airbags, but Spanish manufacturer Derbi looks to be taking motorcycle gadgetry into more dangerous territory, recently unveiling a concept bike tricked out with four cameras and an an LCD monitor. The Mulhacen 659 X-Vision looks to be an impressive enough motorcycle in its own right, but the real excitement comes when you flip on the recording unit and start capturing your ride from every direction, including, it seems, a shot of your own mug -- which should nicely catch the look on your face the moment you fly off into the woods because you've been staring at the screen instead of the road. This being a concept, however, you likely won't be able to get one anytime soon. Of course, it would be a fairly simply task to rig up your own setup on any old motorcycle -- not that we'd ever encourage such a thing.

Apparently Sony's kicking off an early Thanksgiving break tomorrow, as they seem to be exhausting themselves today in preparation. After breaking the news that PSP Spots are US bound, floating the PSP 3.0 firmware out, and probably dealing with that massive invoice they just received from Thomas Menino and friends, the company is issuing a quasi-promise that the 1080i / 720p output problems plaguing some distraught PS3 owners will be fixed. Interestingly enough, Sony places a slightly unbelievable amount of blame on "antiquated HDTVs," as if having an HDTV that supports 720p is some sort of hidden requirement to operate a PlayStation 3. While we fully understand that most HDTV sets purchased today will indeed play nice with 720p signals, where's the love for folks who snagged those first generations sets produced by yours truly? According to Sony, a fix is on the way, but it doesn't sound like you'll be getting served with a smile.

Australia's new copyright bill looks like it could soon be causing sleepless nights for anyone that owns an iPod or other digital audio player if its enacted in its current form, with strict limitations that could seemingly affect individuals whether they know they're infringing on copyright or not. Under the harshest penalty, The Sydney Morning Herald Reports, an individual can face up to five years in jail and a fine of AUD$65,000 if he/she possesses "a device, intending it to be used for making an infringing copy of a work or other subject-matter." What's more, under "strict liability provisions", you can be hit with a $6,600 fine or ticketed by police on the spot to the tune of $1320 simply for possessing infringing material, even if you didn't know you were violating copyright. While there were recently exceptions made to permit CD ripping, even those are apparently too limiting to be workable, according to Intellectual Property Research In...

BenQ is already bursting with LCD display options, but it doesn't look like they're slowing down just yet. Today we've got four more "official" displays to choose from: the FP92W (pictured) and FP222W widescreens we've already spotted, and the new FP73GS and FP93GS 4:3 displays. Both of 'em manage 1280 x 1024 resolutions, 300 nits brightness and 5ms response times. The 17-inch FP73GS has a lovably-skinny 0.47-inch bezel, and a 700:1 contrast ratio, while the FP93GS rocks a 0.51-inch bezel, 19-inch screen and an 800:1 contrast ratio. Not shabby at all, and the $229 and $289 respective price tags aren't horrible either. All four displays should be available any day now.
