We know Nokia's got a big event planned for London tomorrow, but Unwired View's got the images of just what's being shown: among the releases, the 8GB N81 gaming / media phone will be there (though we've little more information the device itself). Also mentioned: the "N95 8GB" device and some new XpressMusic phones. Stay tuned for more info as we get it.

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment:
It's a beautiful afternoon at SeaWorld. You're walking through one exhibit when you spot a group of penguins that look like they're about to break into a number from Happy Feet III: Mumble's Bumble, which you watched with your nephew after you wirelessly downloaded it to your portable video player last week.
You shoot some video with the high-definition camcorder pulled from your shirt pocket, press a button, and the video is soon uploaded to your favorite video sharing site. By the time you're out of the exhibit, the little scamp has sent you a video response on your internet tablet asking if you managed not to spill the popcorn this time. As you head home and turn on the wirelessly streaming music service in your car, you think to yourself that he'll get his the next time you two go head-to-head in that mult...

With Microsoft's WGA servers patched up after last week's outage, the company now appears to be willing to get a bit more specific about the situation and the damages done. In a post on the official Windows Genuine Advantage blog, Microsoft's Alex Kochis revealed that " fewer than 12,000 systems were affected worldwide" and that "many of those have already revalidated and are fixed." As for how the situation arose, it seems that Microsoft was in the dark initially, first learning of it "through a combination of posts to our forum and customer support." Curious about the matter, Ars Technica asked Microsoft for more information about the outage and why no backup had been put in place, but was apparently told by a spokesperson that "Microsoft is still determining the answer to these questions."

What would you get if you crossed a Helio Ocean, Windows Mobile 6 Standard, and UMTS? This here Pantech C180, naturally. Boy Genius Report has pictures of the AT&T-branded device being called "Mustang" and "Duo" internally, though it's not known whether either of those names will make it to production; features are said to include a 3G radio of some sort (either UMTS or UMTS / HSDPA), microSD expansion, that wild dual-slide action with a numeric keypad in one direction and a full QWERTY deal in the other, and a 65,000-color display -- but other than that, we're in the dark. It's rumored to be hitting as soon as next month for $250 on contract, and if this all checks out, we suspect AT&T may have a difficult time keeping 'em stocked.

It looks like Vista users that have noticed a slowdown in network traffic while they were playing music weren't imagining things, as Windows expert Mark Russinovich has reportedly confirmed that such a bug does indeed exist. According to PC World, the problem is confined to systems with multiple network interfaces (like both wired and wireless connections), and is only noticeable on a high-speed local network, not when you're on the Internet. Apparently, the bug lies in Vista's NDIS throttling code, which magnifies throttling in cases of multiple NICs, resulting in a slowdown in network traffic. In real word tests, Russinovich says he found that resulted in a 6 percent throughput on a 1Gb network with Windows Media Player playing, as opposed to a 20 percent throughput without it running. No word on a fix just yet but, as PC World points out, you may want to halt the tunes if you're planning on doing a lot of copying.

Although frankly the benefits they'll see are marginal -- especially if they've already upgraded their handsets to AKU 3 -- many Sprint PPC-6700 / Verizon XV6700 devotees will nevertheless be delighted to learn that xda-developers forum member helmi_c is promising an Apache-compatible build of Windows Mobile 6 to be released this Friday, and he's got the screenshots that claim to prove it. As tipster Joey put it, "many of us [6700] owners have been kinda left out in the cold with no WM6 love for the 6700," but where manufacturers and carriers fail to act, you can usually count on the tireless community over at xda-developers to provide a solution -- and from the looks of things, helmi_c's build even trumps the standard upgrade by cooking the HTC Touch interface right in. Good stuff if it does indeed pan out, so we'll keep you posted.

Can it be true? Is the the Googlephone nigh at hand? Not that we haven't been hearing this time after time (after time after time, etc.), but we've actually got some hot news from a number of very trustworthy sources about Google's plans for the mobile space. Namely, Google's mobile device platform is well on its way, and will be announced in the very near future.
We understand that the "Gphone OS" (our name for it, not theirs) began development after Google's very quiet 2005 acquisition of mobile software company Android, started by Danger cofounder and former-prez / CEO Andy Rubin. At Google, Andy's team has developed a Linux-based mobile device OS (no surprise) which they're currently shopping around to handset makers and carriers on the premise of providing a flexible, customizable system -- with really great Google integration, of course.
As for the timeframe on this thing, we keep hearing Google will announce its mobile ...

Bug Labs just threw the door wide open on its website, and is finally hitting us with the nitty gritty on its open source hardware modules. There are too many details to get into, but the BUGbase "foundation" module is boasting an ARM1136JF-S processor, 128MB of RAM, 802.11b/g WiFI, USB, Ethernet and a small LCD with button controls. There are four connectors on the BUGbase to plug into other modules, and plenty of support for cameras, networking, displays and the like. So far the confirmed modules include GPS, camera, touchscreen LCD and an accelerometer, while under "coming soon" we've got features like a double-width touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard, audio speaker and mini jacks, and of course the all-important "teleporter" module. Bug Labs is still on the hunt for beta testers, so if you're not afraid of getting your hands dirty with an SDK and some halfway-there-hardware, be sure to hit 'em up.

Just in case you haven't seen enough of Dell's, um, eye-catching XPS M1730 gaming laptop, the folks at LaptopSpirit have kindly let loose a slew of new pics of it in the wild, with the laptop's various color options on full display. In addition to the stylish red option above, you'll also be able to get the laptop in your choice of Sapphire Blue, Bone White or Smoke Grey, each of which should attract varying degrees of askance glances from passers-by. Thankfully, the laptop's innards are a good deal more attractive than its exterior, including your choice of top-end Core 2 Duo processors, NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT graphics, up to 4GB of RAM, and an optional Blu-ray drive among other desirable options. Those still undecided about a purchase can get a better look at the laptop by hitting up the read link below.

According to recent news out of NASA, the next time the Discovery crew take their ship into orbit, the "force" will be with them -- because they're taking Luke Skywalker's lightsaber along for the ride. That's right, for the film's 30th anniversary, the original lightsaber prop from the first Star Wars film is taking a ride into actual space... but that's not all. Apparently, Chewbacca will be on hand to pass the saber to officials from the Houston Space Center, and then together with Jango and Boba Fett, he will help push a plane back on the tarmac (for reasons unknown to us). But wait, there's more. When the Discovery lands in Houston after its space travels, the crew will be greeted by a group of Stormtroopers and other "Star Wars notables," including the much-loved R2-D2, who will then deliver the lightsaber to a waiting line of Hummers. Afterwards, there will be a party at the Mos Eisley Cantina, where Figrin D'an ...
