Although Thomson's V888 isn't apt to make any calls, it sure slides with the best of 'em. This interestingly designed portable media player maximizes screen space by relocating the full gamut of controls beneath the display, and with all that space for buttons, we're delighted to see a control pad layout for playing any built-in games. Additionally, this unit packs a four-inch display, supports MPEG1/2/4, DivX, MP3, WAV, WMA, ASF, DAT, MOV and a host of other formats, includes an image / text viewer, and even does video out. You'll also find a removable battery, voice recording capabilities, and an SD expansion slot for loading up media. No word on pricing or availability at the moment, but click on for a few more snapshots of this unique device.

Developing robots with flea-like attributes seems to be quite popular these days, as researchers at the University of Lucca have apparently created a diminutive bot that was "developed to detect mercury poisoning in the ground and leap from place to place the way fleas or frogs jump." The creature measures in at ten-centimeters long and weighs just 80-grams, and can supposedly cover "vast amounts of land in shorter amounts of time" compared to less efficient pollution-seeking alternatives. Currently, the critters are purportedly being loosed in the wild with "special mercury-deteting sensors," so be sure not to squash any hard workin' mechanical pests if one accidentally hops in your tent.

Remember that Seoul power outage which took down six chip production lines for the world's largest flash memory producer, Samsung? Well, those predictions of NAND flash memory shortages appear to be ringing true. If statements from PQI's general manager, Jance Lu are to be believed, then Samsung will be fulfilling only 85% of their promised NAND flash deliveries to "its major customers" in the second half of August. It goes without saying then that the estimated 3% shortage in global NAND supply will be followed by a sharp increase in NAND prices due to the unquenchable demand. With modern manufacturers relying on "just in time" inventory fulfillment to keep storage and holding costs to a minimum, you'd better hold tight for possible flash-heavy, product shortages-to-come this holiday season. Egads, if true, we're looking at possible shortages in cellphones, GPS devices, handhelds, DAPs and PMPs including, of course, iPods and iP...

There was a lot of iPhone chatter this week -- although Apple might have done all it can to lock the little bugger down, it seems people are still finding ways to extend and explore its capabilities, while AT&T might have finally gotten the hint about those ridiculous paper bills.
Logic3 unveiled the i-Station Traveler (pictured), the first speaker dock we've seen specifically for the iPhone. While most iPod docks tend to work fine with the iPhone, the $60 Traveller is designed specifically around the horizontal orientation, allowing you to watch movies while the iPhone is docked.
Meebo and Facebook both launched iPhone-specific versions of their sites, allowing you to IM your friends and stalk your exes with all the swoopy-slidey flair you'd expect.
Orange continued to act all coy about potentially being Apple's partner in France, saying only that it had "no comment" on the iPho...

We're not certain who still uses dictation machines -- isn't illegal to not know how to type? -- but Grundig's ready to drag you into the future with its DigtaSonicMic, which features USB sound in / out as well as trackpoint mouse control so you can manipulate files on your machine as you walk around the room pompously dictating away. The unit also interfaces with Grundig's full line of dictation and transcription software, allowing it to plug into your network and offload your spoken-word brilliance to a remote transcriptionist. No word on price or availability, but we're guessing most of you can think of dozen alternate solutions that'll work just as well.

It's already been a rough year for Dell's dwindling market share much to the delight of HP and Apple. Now, as followup to the evidence of accounting errors and misconduct announced back in March, Dell has admitted that their senior / executive management regularly falsified quarterly financial returns from 2003 to 2006. In a filing with the SEC, Dell admits that "account balances were reviewed, sometimes at the request of senior executives, with the goal of seeking adjustments so that quarterly objectives could be met." In only one case did Dell actually invent sales numbers, usually, the shifty accounting involved the recognition of revenue earlier than appropriate. Dell must now reduce its reported net income for the period by as much as $150 million with the biggest downward restatements hitting Q1 2003 and Q2 2004 by 10 to 13 percent -- other quarters are expected to be 5 percent or less. Canon's SD850 IS may not have caused all that much of a stir when it was announced a few months back, but those still trying to make up their mind about it can head over to Photography Blog, which has just put the camera though its usual review process. While they found the SD 850 IS (known as the IXUS 950 IS overseas) to be quite a bit pricier than some of its 8 megapixel competitors, they nonetheless found plenty about it to recommend, including its solid feel and all-metal case and, most importantly, generally great images delivered straight out of the camera. On the downside, they found a bit of noise cropping up when shooting in low light conditions at ISO 200 or above, although even there they found it to perform better than many of its competitors. If that's enough to convince you, you can grab the camera now for an MSRP of $400, or considerably less if you shop around.

If the talking heart mouse was the brain child of anyone other than Solid Alliance, we'd probably question its legitimacy, but considering that zany is this company's mantra, we're not surprised in the least. On the surface, this shiny red USB mouse boasts a left and right click, a scroll-wheel, and a heartfelt (ahem) design, but apparently, this thing also emits optimistic phrases (read: I love you) to keep you mousing even when fighting through carpal tunnel syndrome. It's a little late (or way early, depending on perspective) for Valentine's Day, but for ¥1,980 ($17), why not treat someone special anyway?

Of course, this isn't the first time Foxy's temper has flared up, but when she was confronted over the volume of her stereo system, the handset came out (a few days later, mind you) for purposes other than texting, talking, or capturing the impending battle for future viewing. So, you may be wondering how much damage a flung BlackBerry can do, and if that's the case, here's your answer: the victim was left with a cut lip and a loose tooth.
