According to recent rumblings, Sanyo Electric is seriously considering cutting its mobile phone operations loose, and is apparently in talks with a number of competing manufacturers about purchasing the ailing line. At the top of the "interested parties" list are Sharp and Kyocera, well known phone-makers hoping to pick up the ailing company's slack (which currently constitutes about 15 percent of Sanyo's overall sales). The news comes as little surprise, given the current restructuring scramble Sanyo is attempting after a whopping 72 percent drop in operating profit in recent months. Phone sales for Sanyo are now expected to fall 1.5-1.6 million short, according to the company, which has posted a net loss for the past three years and is rumored to be selling off its semiconductor operations. At this rate, there may be dark days ahead for the Japanese giant.

Though there's been plenty of inventions that help brain-injured individuals regain a somewhat normal gait, a split-belt treadmill that oftentimes "pushes people into sloppy versions of Michael Jackson's moonwalk" is certainly one of the most bizarre. The device enables one foot to move up to four times faster than the other or throw one leg into reverse whilst the other moves forward, essentially forcing one's brain to make an "unconscious adjustment" in order to keep him / her from falling down. The goal, now, however, is to figure out how to make the temporary fixes instituted by the moonwalk machine permanent -- without forcing the disabled to live out their lives with Thriller running through their headphones.

We'll be straight with you: under no circumstances should you give this villainous "hack" a go outside of one serious round of perfectly legal Capture The Flag. That said, a Hollywood-inspired individual figured that he'd rig up the next great security camera deactivation scheme for the 007 writers the world over to take note of, and if you've got a scope, a laser, a spare cellphone (and quick thumbs for SMS-ing), and a bit of wiring knowledge, you too can piece together a dubious hack that you'll likely never utilize. 'Course, if even this seems daedal to you, there's always the tried and true MacGyver method.

Advanced voice recognition technology busted one Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadia recently, a drug kingpin who had drastic plastic surgery in a failed attempt to mask his true identity. Because of his plastic surgery, Brazilian Police were unable to gain positive identification required for an arrest warrant. Instead, Colombian officials provided the US Drug Enforcement Agency with taped conversations, which the US body was able to match to Ramirez Abadia. It's not clear how advanced the technology actually is, since the Government keeps it under wraps: judging by the importance of this arrest, and the impending trial, we'd hope that it's beyond the capabilities of regular off-the-shelf desktop software.

Here's a strange one for you. Remember SAFA's Dia DAP? Yeah, us neither. Nevertheless, a quick search tells us that SAFA's 3one digital audio player is an identical clone to their own, not-so-memorable DAP. Same 79 x 48 x 10-mm dimensions, same 320 x 240 pixel display, same audio and video support, same MiniSD expansion, price, and battery. In fact, the only difference appears to be a circular central controller instead of a diamond. Probably the weakest justification for padding a product portfolio we've seen this side of Creative.

Not a whole lot of background on this one just yet, but judging by the list of flash-based audio players that Philips recognizes as its own, there's a few 8GB flavors of the GoGear SA3300 series that apparently weren't there too long ago. While the SA3300 lineup had members with 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB of internal storage in the past, several new models -- including the SA3385/02, SA3385/37, SA3385/55, SA3385/85, and SA3385/97 -- are all appearing as 8GB siblings. We've no idea if the capacious newcomers will share the 2.4-inch QVGA display, FM tuner, MP3 / MPEG4 support, and preset equalizers found in existing (albeit smaller) versions, but we'll keep an ear to the ground for further developments.

If you can bear to watch the walkthrough video, GottaBeMobile has a hands-on with the HTC Shift, the first UMPC from the traditionally cellphone only company. It appears as if HTC has a winner on its hands with the Shift, as the reviewer seems completely smitten with the device: HTC has definitely nailed the "feel" of the device in terms of balance and finish. The Pocket PC mode seems to be pretty great too: the extra battery life is welcome, and as the reviewer demonstrates, it's very easy to switch between the two modes. "I'm in Vista Business, I'm back in Pocket PC. I'm back in Vista, I'm back in ... " Check it out at 30:35 in the video after the break.Continue reading HTC Shift gets hands on

No word on a production run, but we thought you'd like to peep the latest iteration of DMFC (direct-methanol fuel cell) technology coming out of Samsung. If nothing else, they've at least cleaned up the design of that dock we last peeped back in December. A good sign that they're still intent on releasing this one-month, refillable battery by the end of 2007.

The leak of the first service pack for WIndows Vista, imaginatively named SP1, means that we get to hear about the improvements before it gets a real release. APCMag reviewed a leaked copy of the software, and found that it's pretty much your standard service pack fare: a bunch of bug fixes and noticeable performance tweaks. The only new feature is an option to create a recovery disk, along with a crapload of new install packages for Vista's components, with no readily apparent changes. So, what's Microsoft waiting for? Get it out the door already!
